Nature Series : Production no. 1

Primary woods are Curly Redwood, Mahogany and Sapele. It is trimmed in Cocobolo and Black Walnut with Black Walnut legs. The Redwood wings are cut from a 12/4 billet and book matched to provide movement for the wings of the butterfly. The top is beveled and smoothed by approximately 2" in order to lighten the edge. The mahogany sides received 2 inlays of 1/8" thick Sapele that was then lightly coved, flowing into the shaped and carved walnut legs.  We used quality 95* Brusso stop hinges on this piece.

The piece was driven from the striking figure in the curly Redwood. When I acquired the billet I was amazed by the figure and awed how something so irregular can be so beautiful. It was at that point that the inspiration for this piece struck. The interior is lined with deer suede leather and contains a 3" x 6" oval mirror. The dividers and lift out tray are made from 1/8" mahogany strips, giving a variety of storage options. It is finished with multiple coats of Sam Maloof's Poly/Oil finish and topped with several coats of Sam Maloof's Oil/Wax, polished to a satin finish that begs to be touched. The piece is approximately 8" wide by 6" deep by 4" tall.

This piece currently resides in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
